I Want Your Opinion
Right now in the midst of summer, my local town is holding a local fair. This may seem normal, but beneath the surface there is something which will no doubt cause some .
My local paper printed a front-page article, which revealed that a sex offender, from many years ago, is working there as a caricaturist. I did not read the article in depth, but apparently he was deemed to have served his time and is entitled to make a living. I'm not sure if this was brought to court, but if it hasn't, I'm sure someone will. For those of you who do not know, in Brick Township, there is a new law that bans sex offenders from residence.
There are many cops there, and I'm sure that nothing will happen, but I want to hear your opinions.

Sex offenders is a good way to start off a new blog. Interesting because they have a high rate of recidivism. That pun will only be noticed by Warren.

Beak, I can think of 167 reasons why that pun was a groaner, (ARGH!)
I have no sympathy for pedophiles or rapists. To say that they have a high rate of recidivism, especially the pedophiles, is a gross understatement.
There has never been a pedophile that has been cured. They simply wait until they think they can get away with it then do it again. Summary justice with a soviet style execution would seem appropriate.
That having been said, I know that there have been people charged as sex offenders that have been charged with other offenses then plea bargain to the "lesser" offense of being a "sex offender". They might have gotten drunk and had sex with an underage girl (usually) or flashed someone after a generous dose of liquid brain remover.
Not realizing that their plea bargain might not 'just' get them out of jail time, but label them a sex offender.
I would hate to think that I went out partying, mooned the prosecutors wife and ended up on the sex offenders list.
I guess what I'm trying to say is; we "should" castigate true sex offenders, but we need to make sure that they are truly guilty of a crime and not just victims of circumstance, their own stupidity and a lazy justice system.
(DM, I'll put up a link and give you a plug this evening.)

here's the link to the full story

in short, the guy who's 77 yrs old was convicted in 1985 of aggravated sexual assault of a girl under 13. this is a guy who is also considered a Tier 2 risk (medium).
thanks

I got that one -- not just Warren. ;)
Since they do repeat so often, I wish we could come up with a better way to keep track of them. I don't think their doing "time" should be enough. They need to be kept away from kids.

I read the link and the real question would seem to be, what possibly can we do about it now. That question is rhetorical since the justice system is done with him now.
We have to let him make a living. There wouldn't seem to be a question about that.
Esther is correct, we need to keep track of them. They need to be kept away from kids.
We could make that easy to do with a GPS locator but the ACLU would raise hell.
I would propose that if we must release them, (and you would have a hard time convincing me), that they be on parole for the rest of their natural life and one of the terms be that they have to wear a GPS locator.

when i wrote the post, i had only skimmed it over, but i read it through and have determined a few things.
this guy is/was a sick pedophile. he did his time and is permanently considered a moderate risk.
the article mentioned that he has been working all over the east coast, but said nothing about any reports about him abducting another child. this can mean one of two things- 1.) he didn't commit another sex crime (or) 2.) he did commit another crime and nobody has confessed it. i would personally like to believe the former, but who knows. since there have been no reports of this guy since, i would see no reason why he shouldn't make a living.
warren- lol about the ACLU comment.
but in all seriousness, i think a GPS system to keep sex offenders on close watch is a great idea. the percent of repeating is too high not to put these guys on watch.
