Hurricane Katrina

This is a very strong storm, one that is causing some serious damage. I have been watching news coverage on all the cable news networks and have heard that some people couldn't
leave for two reasons:

1.) They couldn't afford to leave.

2.) They didn't listen to the warning.

These are NOT VALID EXCUSES.

Solution to problem 1, is to have people carpool or set aside money to provide transportation for mandatory evacuations. The solution to problem 2 is that people should always listen to the warnings.

I am so sick and tired of people not listening to these warnings, any warnings. Do they think there is some conspiracy? Give me a break. The ones issuing the call are trying to prevent anything worse from happening. Casualties can be avoided. Why do you think they have tornado warning systems in the Midwest? They are doing it to prevent senseless casualties. There is one difference though- the Midwesterners actually listen to them and act upon them. Are they the only ones with common sense?

DM, tornados are different, the damage is far more localized and there isn't enough time to leave the area after a warning.

Generally, people have a greater time to prepare before a hurricane but they have been lulled into a false sense of security of their own making.

Hurricane intensity runs in a 30 to 40 year cycle. Because the hurricanes have been relatively mild for the last several years, people trend to think it is normal. Its not.

I would never, if I could help it, make my home on either coast. The east coast because of the ocean storms and the west because of the seismic activity, mud slides and fires.

I would rather live here, where its safer, in tornado alley.

tornados are more localized, but the are 100% unpredictable. once they touch down no one can say which direction they are headed for, making everyone in the area a target.

no one has to leave, but rather move into an underground cellar. places in the midwest have them and they are much safer than being in a home.

this hurricane was a whopper. when it hiy my grandma in FL it was barely a category 1. a few limbs were knocked and power was lost for a couple of hours. after it went into the gulf, meteorologists predicted it would bulk up and hit LA area hard (they finally got one right). and as a result of people not going, you have the biggest casualty hurricane in years and the most costly in history.

Has anyone asked John Kerry about the Big Dig. Maybe the pork spent there could have been used to fix the levees

This has been such a hidious disaster. My heart goes out to the people affected by it. I do wish everyone who wanted to get out, could have. I heard two tourists tell their story of how Delta Airlines cancelled their flight out Sunday from New Orleans and they couldn't find a car to rent and no one would let them in their car to leave. After several harrowing experiences (and days), they finally got out and were completely freaked out. They knew to obey warnings (they live in FLA) but they just couldn't find a way out of town.

Blame for this catastrophe rests solely upon the incompetent shoulders of the local Democrats who failed to initiate any form of disaster planning. Questions that the local Democrat government officials should have been able to answer upon the arrival of federal assistance where answered with the phrase "I don't know." Questions like:

"What are you doing to secure areas from looters?"

"What are you doing to protect levees from sabotage and reinforce them at weakened spots?"

"Have you commandeered all available mass transit to evacuate those that can't get out?"

"Are the sites you have evacuated people to secured with both food, water, and communications?"

"Where's your command center?"

"Does anyone in the room have an IQ over 75?"

sure the local govt. should have been more prepared, yet i somehow feel that whether it was a Dem or Rep, either one would have screwed up the planning.
