Here It Is

Chief Justice William Rhenquist passed late Saturday night after battling thyroid cancer for some time now.

His death now opens another seat, something we all knew would happen either this year or the next. The battle will rage on, and behind the scenes, I think there is already a stirr among the Democrats & Republicans.

LETS GET IT ON!

The president is nominating Roberts to fill the slot, taking the wind out of the Demo sails.

Smart move. The trope about replacing a Moderate with a Conservative is dead. Since Roberts nomination is already in process, it makes stalling tactics seem even more idiotic and, unannounced in the press, it looks like Roberts is a shoo-in.

Look for Roberts conformation before October and WW3 for the next nomination.

i don't know enough on where Roberts lies on some things, but from what i know, he is a good candidate for the job. i would have posted an update on his chief justice nomination, but you beat me to the punch. Roberts is certainly no Rehnquist and it was a smart move by Bush to nominate a moderate leaning right instead of a full blown conservative.

do you think we should do an internet pool on how long it takes for the second nominee to get in? after all, you do predict WW3 to happen.

DM,
I'm sure that Chuck Schummer would disagree with you about the position that John Roberts holds in the left/right battle. :^)

I would be totally shocked if the President nominates anyone other than a conservative to fill the position. People as qualified as John Roberts are exceedingly rare.

O'Connor, has said that she would remain until the position is filled so there isn't any overriding reason to be in a hurry to fill the position.

Too many variables, the only thing I'll predict right now is war. I have no idea what kind of timeline to bracket.

But I'm game for a pool. (I have no idea how to set it up though).

chuck schummer has to disagree with me because if he doesn't, then he will no doubt lose support. he and the rest of the Dems are putting a lot of strain on Roe V. Wade. after i found out what would really happen if Roe was overturned (abortion would become a state issue, making Dem states legal and Rep illegal) it doesn't seem like too big a deal anymore. it would be ideal to leave it alone as per stare decisis, but it seems too good to be true.

robert's crudentials are more than satisfactory.

as for the pool, all i need to know is when the nominee is going to start to go through the process in the Senate. i would also need to know if there is a minimum time alotted (i.e. lets say at least one week, yet somehow i doubt there is one because there is no maximum). after that, you, Beak, me, and anyone else interested will take two week slots. to determine these slots i am going to devise a way in which we delegate them. then we mark the calendar and BAM, a pool is going. since the pool is online, the prize will be determined later.

There is some thought that President should go ahead and nominate a replacement for O'Connor, now.

That sounds like a good strategy to me. It would require Schummer & Co to attack two judicial nominees by calling them both "to far out of the mainstream". Making them look even sillier than they do now. It would be even better if it were a Black woman like Janet Rogers Brown.

I doubt that the president would make that appointment because she is more of a libertarian than a conservative. But I would still like to see her appointment.
